Direct speech मधून Indirect speech (प्रत्यक्ष कथन ते अप्रत्यक्ष कथन) करताना दोन मुख्य नियम लागू होतात - पहिला, Tense (काळ) मागे जातो, आणि दुसरा, काळ किंवा वेळ दर्शवणारे शब्द (Time expressions) देखील बदलतात. मूळ वाक्यात 'went' हा Simple Past Tense आहे, तो Indirect speech मध्ये Past Perfect Tense म्हणजे 'had gone' असा होतो, कारण Reporting Verb 'said' हे Past Tense मध्ये आहे. तसेच 'yesterday' (काल) हा शब्द Indirect speech मध्ये 'the day before' असा बदलतो, कारण भूतकाळातील उल्लेख वेगळ्या दिवशी सांगितला जात असल्यामुळे 'yesterday' हा शब्द थेट वापरता येत नाही. म्हणून पर्याय (2) 'He said that he had gone to his friend's house the day before' हे वाक्य दोन्ही नियम (Tense बदल आणि Time expression बदल) योग्यरित्या पाळत असल्यामुळे बरोबर आहे. हा नियम इंग्रजी व्याकरणाच्या Narration/Reported Speech या प्रकरणातील मानक नियम आहे.
